A Temporary Farewell

Hey,

as what the title has suggested, this blog will be undergoing a hiatus for the moment because there has been lots of new things entering my life. At the moment I won't be focusing too much on my Shogi studies but I'll definitely join the weekly Shogi gatherings in Melbourne and also try to promote Shogi in June.

So what are the reasons for my temporary inactivity in Shogi? Well, I've recently pick up a guitar and I'm learning it from scratch. I've been thinking of learning the guitar for years and just a month ago I've decided to give it a try. I actually love music alot, especially rock music so I was thinking why not learn how to play the guitar so I could play my favourite songs? Learning the guitar is no easy thing for a beginner and it has taken up a tremendous amount of time just to get my fingers used to chords and chords changing. My finger tips are a little sore as I'm typing right now. =)

Another reason for the lack of time is the assignments! Assignments are getting heavier and heavier by the end of this semester and exams are coming up next month! I've gotta study and make preparations for exams.

Lastly, I would like to say is that I finally have a girlfriend. =) Since our relationship has just started so I personally think that it's important to spend more time with her and build up our relationship. She is an understanding person and would willing to sacrifice "our bonding time" so I could focus on my stuff, but I don't want her to do that so that's why I'm using some of my "leisure or free" time with her.

This is not a farewell. After I've managed to master the guitar and get my studies over, I'll be sure to come back with a loud BANG! =)

Quiet blog is quiet

Hey,

I guess it has been a long time since I've made any post. I'm finally back in Melbourne and I'm trying to cope up with my studies. It's been really hectic with all those individual/group assignments that it's really getting on my nerves.

Well, to be honest, not much stuffs have happened to me for the past few months. However I did manage to join the tournament that I've mentioned in my last post.

YEA! THE KL-MEIJIN SEN 2010!!!!!!!

Participants for the tournament are lesser this time, and I happened to meet few of my old rivals. =) Unfortunately I lost during the first round. My opponents too good that he made it into the finals! He said that he is a 2-dan player but I highly doubt it since he can face against a 5-dan amateur player almost at an equal level! Hate to admit it, but I did made a huge blunder which ultimately cost me the game. Ouch.

Next I had an evaluation game against Kenji Kobayashi 9-dan with a rook-handicapped. Sad thing is, I manage to get a win from him but failed. =/ Great news is that he acknowledge my skills at 2-dan amateur, which is a great thing to hear but I'm still highly doubt that I have acquired the level of 2-dan.

Not much Shogi things going on for me recently but I've heard news that there are going to be:
1. A Shogi tournament held in West Malaysia (unconfirmed from the host)
2. Another Shogi promotion from Darren Paul (Ramalam) in Melbourne during June!

I sincerely apologized for the lack of details and information about the Shogi Festival 2010. I didn't happen to have any camera with me at that time. And I would also like to apologize for the lack of updates on my blog. It just seems that there are lesser and lesser interesting Shogi events happened for me that there are nothing to write about. I've been brainstorming for the couple of weeks about what I should write about and I came out with a few. Should I write about:
1. On-going Professional Shogi tournaments with personal analysis and comments?
2. Random analysis and impression of professional Shogi game records?
3. Random pick of amateur games (especially from 81-Dojo) and personal opinion and analysis of their games?
4. Interesting Shogi articles from other foreign bloggers (most notably a Shanghai player)?
5. About my non-Shogi related personal life?

It would be great if anyone could give me any opinion about this. Afterall, this is about my Shogi life and I would definitely love to keep this blog going on and on and on and on till my last breath.

I'm definitely hoping for some advices and would love to update this blog again soon in the future after I've received some comments from you all. =)

Back in Malaysia!

Hey,

I'm finally back in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but my stay will be until mid-December only.

My purpose of staying in Malaysia this time is to help my family with the Buddhist Event, so I won't be able to go to Japan Club Kuala Lumpur as much as possible. But today I did go to JCKL, so it was really great to see my friends again.

I am here to inform everyone in West Malaysia that this year's Shogi Festival is on again! Here's the details of the event:

Date: 28th November 2010 (Sunday)
Time: 10.00am to 5.00pm
Location: 'Japan Club Kuala Lumpur', Fuji Room

Extra Info Location: it's just a small walk from Midvalley, roughly about 5 minutes.

1. Knockout Tournament with adult and child category
2. A talk by Kenji Kobayashi, 9-dan professional Shogi player
3. Strength evaluation by Kenji Kobayashi
4. Free Dinner?

There is a high possibility that I won't be able to participate in this wonderful event, so this is really disappointing for me. =/

Anyways if I manage to take out some free time to join, please wish me good luck if you happen to see me there!

Don't miss this chance to meet professional player who only came once a year and also participate the KL-Meijin-sen and become the next KL Meijin! If you miss this event, you might have a hard time to join this event again!

Melbourne Update 2!

Hey,

Sorry I haven't bee updating much. I've been busy with my studies, but I am still studying Shogi as usual. Exams are coming soon and I am actually sad that I am not able to play Shogi during this study period.

I seriously can't wait for exams to be over. I was told by Darren (ramalam) that there's going to be a Japan Festival in November in Melbourne, and we are going to promote Shogi there! Unfortunately I don't have the details so I can't pinpoint the date and location of the event.

I will be going back to Malaysia on the 13th November for 3 weeks, so anyone in West Malaysia who's interested in playing Shogi can definitely meet me in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur on Saturday from 3pm to 8pm. Shogi in MELBOURNE!

Hey,

I'm sorry I haven't been able to post anything for the last few weeks because I still do not have any internet connections at the moment! (I'm using my university's connection right now)

As everyone have guessed, I am now in Melbourne, currently in my 2nd week of stay and I'm really enjoying the cold winter in the city, although there isn't any snow at all. =/

Thanks to my previous post, I was able to meet up with a few Shogi players in Melbourne and it is really a great honour to join their gathering. =) A great thanks to Darren, who is the organizer of the gathering, for letting me know about the Shogi gathering so I can continue practising my Shogi by playing against Shogi players.

The sad thing about being in Melbourne is that there aren't any Japanese bookstores! (or I haven't been able to locate them) And Kinokuniya is only available in Sydney, which is hours of flight away! Fortunately I was able to find a Japanese gift shop that actually pre-orders magazines from Japan so I was able to subscribe myself copies of 'Shogi Sekai', which is a great thing for me to continue improving my shogi skills!

At the moment there isn't much happenings in Melbourne regarding Shogi for me, but I do hope I could get heavily involved with Shogi-related events in Melbourne in the coming future. I heard that there is a Shogi club in Monash University, so I might try to contact them someday.

End of Path... The Beginning of a New Journey

Hey,

Tonight's the last night of me staying in Malaysia. I'll be returning back to Brunei temporary for my holidays and finally go to Australia in July to pursue my studies for 2 years in Melbourne.

I can't believe time passed by so quickly over the course of four years during my stay in Malaysia. Looking back at my old posts, I felt a great sense of achievement about my Shogi career - how I've started playing Shogi and tried to get my hands on Shogi equipments, how I've trained myself day and night trying to improve my skills and how I've travel and met great and challenging opponents. It has been a wild and fun ride, and I can't believe I'm still in love with Shogi!

If there's anyone out there asking me what is the only thing that I'm most proud of, I would definitely answered "My Shogi Career".

Although my journey in Malaysia has come to an end, it is only the conclusion of a chapter of my story. My journey, or my story, will still continue when I go to Australia for my studies, ensuring that I will achieve my 'real' dreams.

I want to thank you all fellow readers for accompanying with me in this great journey during my stay in Malaysia. I can't express how much it has been a great support to encourage me to continue my Shogi career. I hope you, the fellow reader, will continue to travel with me in Australia while I strive to achieve my dream in my Shogi career, as a proud Malaysia player.

I'm sure some of my 'Shogi friends' have heard me talking, but I am going to graduate soon in Malaysia by the end of May and I'm going to Australia to pursue further studies for a year. It's saddening to say this, but after I have graduated in Australia, I am planning to go back to my hometown, Negara Brunei Darussalam and start my working career. This means that I am only going to stay in Malaysia till the end of May and will not come back again. All I can say is that my three years of Shogi experience in Malaysia have been fruitful, and priceless. Of course I am still pursuing my dream of becoming a professional Shogi player while I'm in Brunei, but I have already planned my path after I've left Malaysia. Here's my plan.

1. July 2011 - going back to Brunei to work.

2. Around 2015 - 2016 - if my Shogi strength is still weak, I am going to quit my job, go to Japan and become a teaching pro.

3. After becoming a teaching pro, if my strength improves, I will try to go for professional license.

Basically that's my plan for the future, although short. Hahahaha. Again, I would like to stress that I am not planning to study in Japan, but if I manage to become a teaching professional, I will MOST likely go to Japan and work. The main reason why I'm staying in Brunei to work is because I have promise my family to support them. But after few years later, which my little sister has graduated from her university and start working, then I won't have to support my family anymore and FULLY concentrate on pursuing my dreams. I really wanted to stay in Malaysia and work, but supporting family comes first for me.

Anyways, to all the Malaysian Shogi players out there, thanks for watching or taking care of me all these times. Your kindness have been really grateful to me. Thanks. Nevertheless I'll still work hard in Shogi as usual! Gambatte!

It's been a long long time

Hey,

how is everyone? It has sure been a long time since I've last updated this blog, haven't I? Truth to be told, I was kind of demotivated of updating this blog, especially when I'm busy and every update will always take about three to four hours! I kid you not! Each and everytime I update my blog, I would spent about 3 or 4 hours just to plan, type and edit my post! Even if it were a short post, it would take at least an hour! I guess probably the time factor of updating the blog has really demotivated me, especially during busy times.

So any new updates on my side? One of the good news is that I managed to beat a 5-dan amateur and officially became a 2-dan amateur player. Although I'm still a new 2-dan player, I'm still kinda weak so I hope I can make myself a solid 2-dan player on my casual games.

Aside from achieving 2-dan, I was invited by Quintom Yap to his university MMU in Melaka to be an arbiter for his organized Dragon King Tournament, although it's a closed. Looking at all the preparations and the schedules prepared by him, I am greatly impressed at the effort that he has put into it so I'm giving a big shoutout to him! Nevertheless I am looking forward to visit his university on the 2nd of April.

What about me? What have I done? Recently I realised that I am slowly losing the fire in my soul regarding about Shogi. Of course everyday I would read up new Shogi strategies and replay new kifus played by pro kishi, but it seems that something is missing. Maybe my mindset about having a "fun game" in Shogi is wrong, these days even if I lose I won't feel a thing. Maybe I should have a mindset of "not losing" that could kindle the fire in my soul, just like when I started Shogi. Just like what would the Singaporeans would do, maybe I really should be more "kiasu"and hope to strive victorious in all the games. Anyways I really think the mindset of "having fun"should really go if I really want to improve a lot more from today onwards. Geez, I'm not really sure what I'm talking anymore. Hahaha. Anyways I can ensure you that my love for Shogi will still be there, as always.

Happy 2010!

Hey,

Happy new year to all of you! If all of you have been suspecting, I have not retired from the world of Shogi! I just happened to be busy with some house chores and family so I couldn't really find the time to blog. Before I begin talking about this year's resolutions, let's look at at my previous new year resolutions and see if I have any accomplishments or not.

2009 New Year Resolutions:
1. Achieved 2-Dan amateur within this year!
2. Read up at least 3 psychology books.
3. Write at least 3 stories this year.

Okay, it seems that I did not achieve 2-dan amateur last year, but I promised I am going to become a 2-dan player soon. Last year I have an evaluation game with Kenji Kobayashi pro 9-dan and he evaluated my strength as 2-dan, but I felt strongly that I do not possess that strength yet. I've been trying to solve a 1-dan, 2-dan and 3-dan tsumeshogi problems with more than 15 moves (I will show the picture of the book in the next post) and I was able to solve every questions with a little ease and without a hint.

I did read up a psychology book last year, but failed to read 3 books because due to some "unnecessary" circumstances I was forced to work on my college 'group' assignments all alone, thus taking up a lot more of my time.

Although the stories are in bits and pieces, I did not write any story at all (which by the way are my other hobbies in case you're wondering.) Therefore I did not accomplished any of my new year resolutions. *sigh* What a bummer.

But looking back at the year 2009, I felt that I've made a lot of accomplishments.
1. I've successfully went to Japan, which has always been my dream country of visit ever since I was a child.
2. I've meet a lot of helpful Shogi players in Japan who have supported me in various ways, especially to Mr. Ishimaru, Yuki Kasai, Mr. Kunio Yonenaga, Nakamura Taichi, Mr. Yoshiharu Habu, Ryoya Tone, Yoh Hosokawa (thanks for all the help!), Kazuki Enomoto and others. Thanks for all your support and help during my stay in Japan!
3. I've met new Malaysian Shogi players, ESPECIALLY notably to Mr. Yeoh, who has given me some help and courage.
4. Made new Japanese friends in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur, who have been very friendly to me.
5. And other bits and pieces of accomplishments which I can't seem to remember. Hahaha.

Now onto my 2010 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS!
1. Achieve 2-dan (or 3-dan) amateur in Shogi
2. Write up at least a story
3. Meet more Shogi players.

Lastly an important announcement to all Malaysia Shogi players!

It seems that there are more and more Malaysians playing Shogi so I have been thinking about setting up a 'mini' tournament in West Malaysia (only). It will going to be a friendly tournament so if you're new to Shogi it's all okay! If any Malaysians are interested in making this tournament a reality, please leave down your name (or web-name) and e-mail in my comment and if I felt that there are enough number of players, I AM GLAD to set up a mini tournament for all Malaysians out there.

To summarise it:
1. I need to know how many players are going to join the tournament by commenting on this post. If I felt that there are enough players to join the tournament, I will set it up. Please leave down your name (or web-name) and e-mail in the comments!
2. The purpose of this tournament is just to meet up all the Malaysian players, make friends and have fun. Although it is a tournament, you don't have to be strong or serious in the match. Therefore if you're new to Shogi, you're welcome too!
3. After I've decided to set up the tournament, EVERYONE should be participating in a discussion on how we can set up the tournament. Afterall, I'm only a student so obviously I can't set up everything by myself.
4. HOWEVER the the tournament MUST be set-up before May (with 31st April being the last day) so everyone must give me your answer as early as possible!

Therefore I am asking every Malaysian Shogi players to lend me hands and show me the enthusiasm of creating this mini-tournament! This will be a great opportunity to know that there are Shogi players in Malaysia!

I'm looking forward to great results!

To move, or not to move?

Hey,

Starting this week, I am going to post the kifu of all the games that I've played in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur and going to give deep analysis of all my games so I can see my own improvements or how I can make my game better. However there is just one problem.

Blogspot does not allow me to upload swf files. which is essential for me to post my game. But in Typepad.com I will be able to upload the games' kifus with ease. Now here's my question: should I continue blogging with Blogspot or Typepad?

I certainly do not want to lose all my memories and comments in Blogspot, but I also do not want to waste alot of time just to upload a kifu.

For now I'm uploading a simple flash, but I do hope I will be able to upload a better version in the near future. So for now please advise that should I choose Blogspot or Typepad.

Mini Shogi Interview

Hey,

A lot of people read my blog, and I believe that everyone is curious about my Shogi play style, right? This is a small interview about myself to let players know (especially my opponents who have played against me like Paul Luk, Xinwen, Erwann and so on) so that they can get to know a little better of me, especially due to the fact that I'm always changing my strategy and play style. Here goes!

1. Static or Ranging Rook player?
I have always strive to be a flexible player, excel in both static and ranging rook Joseki, but according to my post in http://ryoushogisekai.blogspot.com/2009/03/as-1-dan-shogi-player.html, it seems that I am suppose to choose. After eight months have passed, I think I still prefer to be both a static and ranging rook player so expect me to play all sorts of Joseki against you!

2. Lucky Item during a serious match?
This one is easy. It's the fan given by Kazuharu Shoshi-sensei. I will always bring it with me whenever I'm going to get serious in Shogi matches/games.

3. Favourite Shogi players of all times?
This is a difficult question! I actually admire a lot of professional players like Moriuchi-sensei, Akira Watanabe, Koji Tanigawa, Sato Yasumitsu, Kubo-sensei, Fujii Takeshi and so on, but if I have to choose one I guess most probably is Yoshiharu Habu-sensei. Afterall, it was Habu-sensei's games that have motivate me to get serious in Shogi.

4. Favourite Static Rook player of all times?
Definitely Yoshiharu Habu-sensei!

5. Favourite Ranging Rook player of all times?
Toshiaki Kubo! The best of the best ranging rook player out there! I really love his games alot, especially his Central Rook Opening (Nakabisha) games!

6. Favourite Amateur player of all times?
I'm giving a huge shoutout to Hidetchi, Manabu Terao and Yuki Kasai for giving alot alot ALOT of contribution to the society by promoting Shogi. The effort and passion that they have showed really touched and impressed my heart. Although I've never seen Hidetchi's and Manabu Terao's games, but I believe that they're excellent players with high skill levels.

7. Most spent time on Joseki?
The time that I have spent the most on studying Joseki is Yagura Joseki, especially the Morishita System.

8. Most spent time on Joseki (ranging rook)?
The time spent mostly on studying is the Fourth File Ranging Rook (Shikenbisha) because I was studying Ibisha Anaguma last time (http://ryoushogisekai.blogspot.com/2009/09/am-i-ready.html), which covers the Fujii System, and I also read a little about it from Kenji Kobayashi's book.
9. Favourite Joseki of all times (playing)?
Another difficult question for me as I played all sorts of Joseki. Most probably the Kakugawari (Bishop Exchange). It's true that I spent a lot of time reading Yagura Joseki (without the Bishop Exchange), but I really hate playing it as I believe it has a great disadvantages for Sente (or black player), but I'm still investing my time reading it anyway!

10. Favourite Ranging Rook Joseki of all times (playing)?
This is another difficult question. I personally like playing Central Rook Opening because it's interesting, but I hate the fact that I can't make a complete Mino Castle (gold at 5h) because the Rook is blocking it and the left side of my castle is a little empty! I have been playing a lot of Opposing Rook recently but still I like Central Rook Opening because it is tough, challenging and exciting for me to play!

11. Favourite Static Rook Joseki of all times (watching)?
I really enjoy Yodofudori (side pawn kicker) games as it is complex and exciting. I saw too many Yagura games and starting to feel a little drowsy about it but I'm still excited to watch a Yagura game.

12. Favourite Ranging Rook Joseki of all times (watching)?
Gokigen Nakabisha! Fast paced game and truly exciting! One of my most favourite game is between Habu-sensei and Kubo-sensei in the 57th Osho-sen game 2: http://www.teu.ac.jp/gamelab/SHOGI/NEXUSBOARD/57osho2Jav.html

13. Favourite Castle of all times?
Errrrr.... another tough one. I spent most of my time making a Yagura castle, but I really hate this castle as almost everyone knows how to exploit it, but then again I still think I like Yagura castle the most. =P

14. Most hated Joseki of all times?
Central Rook Opening (Nakabisha). The reason why I hate playing against a Nakabisha is because the Japanese old man in Japan Club always play Nakabisha against me, and I found that it usually ends up as a tough match for me to beat him, which is a little annoying to me. (http://ryoushogisekai.blogspot.com/2009/04/killing-two-birds-with-one-stone.html) To pay back my respect, I fight fire with fire and played a double Nakabisha against him, which I gained victory. However during our last double Nakabisha game, which is just a few weeks ago, I faced a total defeat against him. I think that's when it change my mind about playing Nakabisha and decided to try using a special ranging rook strategy Opposing Rook. I guess I can't beat a true Nakabisha player. =)

15. Most hated castle of all times?
I used to be afraid of Anaguma, but now that I've learned Ibisha Anaguma, countering it is no longer a problem for me, even during a handicapped game when my opponent is building an Anaguma while I'm playing without a Rook and a Bishop and still won the game. Eh, Alex Chan? =P Like I've stated before, I hate Yagura castle and will definitely spend tremendous amount of time studying on ELIMINATING it.

16. Favourite play style?
Fast and exciting, which both me and my opponents' kings are in high danger without castling. But I still truly enjoy slow-paced games.

17. Hated play style?
Fast-paced games, especially when I make one wrong move and the game is immediately over. I also hated slow-paced games that result in "dreadlock", where both me and my opponent have spent all of our "development moves" and "waste a turn move" and whoever starts the battle first will lose the game immediately. This is not fun at all.

18. Specialty?
My specialty? Hahahaha. To be honest with you all, I'm also not sure what's my specialty because I've been playing too many different kinds of Joseki and strategy. But if I were to choose one, then I guess most probably it's the Yagura Joseki because of the large amount of time I've spent on it, although I really hope I can be more specialise in Kakugawari. Kakugawari really piqued my interest alot.

19. Most Favourite Shogi picture?
My game against Chen Xinwen when I first started playing Shogi in 2007. This game actually lasted for about 3 hours because we're still new to Shogi and we just basically put all our captured pieces back during the endgame, which drags the game too much. But I have been using this as my wallpaper ever since I've gotten this picture and never EVER had I change the wallpaper once before! Definitely my most favourite Shogi picture as it represents a deep and memorable meaning for me.

Hey,

sorry that I haven't been updating much because I didn't expect my college assignments could have taken up most of my time. As a result of it, I didn't spend time on reading 'Basic Joseki Essense: Kakugawari' but instead I have spent more time on solving Tsume-shogi!

I remember Hidetchi once wrote this in a personal message to me:

"Most of the professional players say they solved all the problems in Shogi Zukou and Shogi Musou when they were in Shoureikai."

As I do have plans to become a professional player myself, I've spent a lot of time solving 7 to 11 moves Tsume-Shogi, especially since solving 5 moves and below will only take less than 10 seconds for me to solve. In these two years I've spent more time in solving 5 moves and less Tsume Shogi, so you can say that solving 7 - 11 moves Tsume-Shogi is my first real challenge in my Shogi life, although I did try them out before but never put a lot of attention to them. Out of 20 questions I could solve about 16 or 17 problems, although it have taken some time for me to solve. But I am glad that I was able to solve those questions much better with less than 5 minutes as I continue to progress through the questions. Lastly all I can say is that it seems like my path to become a professional player is SUPER tough but I'll keep on trying out my best!

Short Update Part 2

Hey,

been very busy with assignments and presentations for the past few weeks (even now!)

However, I was able to finish two Shogi books ('Strongest Ibisha Anaguma' by Sato Yasumitsu and 'Basic Joseki Essense: Yagura' by Akira Shima)

I felt that both books are very helpful for beginner players, as 'Strongest Ibisha Anaguma' teaches about the strength and weakness of Anaguma, double Anaguma and also about the 'Fujii System'. The 'Fujii system' is especially useful, as it teaches you the counter-strategies for 'Fujii System', and also how you can play the 'Fujii System' if you're playing fourth-file rook.

As for the 'Basic Joseki Essense: Yagura' is also useful for amateurs, as it gives alot of in-depth explanations for each moves such as P16, P15, Sx86 instead of Px86 etc. Really useful if you want to be a specialist in Yagura.

Right now I am studying 'Basic Joseki Essense: Kakugawari' (Bishop Exchange) by Kazuharu Shoshi. I hope I can give more updates in future after my assignment days are over. Nevertheless, I will not neglect my Shogi studies even during these busy times.

Hey,

As the internet is still down, I won't be able to update about AISEP. But right now I would like to talk about my progress that I've prepared for my first tournament this Sunday.

I have been feverishly studying Shogi every night for about two to three hours. However, since this is my last day of class for this week, I ~~would probably~~ WILL spend more than 7 hours studying Shogi. I have been studying Ibisha Anaguma strategies, which is written by Sato Yasumitsu, and also study a few strategies from Akira Watanabe's books. Aside from those, I have been practicing only a few Tsume-Shogi problems, as I am more focused on strategies since Tsume-Shogi are rather easy for me to solve(?). Not only that, I have been re-studying Kin-Yagura Morishita System as I believe that alot of people might be playing Yagura. But I might try to adopt a Gin-Yagura system, if I am up for a good challenge. For tonight, tomorrow and Saturday, I will be spending time studying Yagura and a few ranging rook strategies, probably more focus on mukaibisha (opposing rook), aifuribisha (double ranging rook) and less focus on Ibisha Anaguma, as playing Anaguma has never been my style/forte. Aside from those, I am looking forward to have a Shogi study session with my good friend Xinwen, if he is not too busy with his college assignments.

Okay, I think you all have read enough of my blabbering. So I would like to let everyone read this wonderful piece of advice, which I have taken from my Portugal friend's (Ricardo) website http://shogiemportugal.blogspot.com/, which gives you tips on improving your Shogi skills. Anyways please be aware that this is only for kyu players, and dan players are not really required to read it.

The ones that I have bolded means that the advice is useful and you must always keep in mind about it.

SHOGI LECTURE FOR THE BEGINNERS

(If you are more than Shodan, you don't need to read this lecture)

LECTURE NO.1 - Initial Set Up of Playing Shogi
------------------------
Please don't forget the following manners when you start playing Shogi with your respectful opponent:

1. As long as the traditional culture concerns, we respect the person who has good modesty to the people. Conversation during play is absolutely prohibited.

2. When you will pick up the piece (KOMA), you have to pick up the Gyoku(king with the dot at the side) first. It has very strict rule that lower class person should have Gyoku and upper one takes Ou (king without the dot at the side). we call them both Koma as King. But there are big difference. If the opponent is the same class as you, you can choose either one of both.
(Ryou's Comment: This is important to know if you want to play a respectful game, or paying your respects to your senior players)

3. After you pick up the Gyoku, you will pick up Kin(Gold) and put this Kin to your left-hand side of Gyoku. Next you pick up other Kin and put it right-hand side of Gyoku.

4. Then you take Gin(Silver), Keima(Knight),Kyousha(Lance) in order.

5. After bottom rank is finished, you will take Fu(Pawn) and put this Fu to 5C/5G position. Then you will follow the same way of others.

6. After you finish Fu, you take Kaku(Bishop) and finally you take Hisha(Rook). (We call this way as "OH-HASHI" style).

7. If the handicap is even, you will take 5 Fu (pawn) and swing them inside of your hands and drop them. If Fu appears more than three pcs., the person who was swinging (you) will take Sente(Black). If there are Tokin more than three pcs., your opponent takes Sente. For handicapped game, the upper class persons always take Sente. But scoring should be written as if the lower class were Sente. Eg. 62 Gin, 76 Fu, 53 Fu, 46 Fu (The lower class persons must tell the upper class "ARIGATOU GOZAIMASHITA' after the game review (actually Koma-Ochi game is teaching) has been finished.
(Ryou's Comment: This process is also known as 'furigoma'. It is always the senior player who do the furigoma to determine who is sente, if I am not mistaken.)

8. After Sente/Gote is decided, both side must mention clearly "ONEGAI SHIMASU!". Then start the game.

9. When you will resign the game, you have to mention very clearly "MAKEMASHITA' or "ARIMASEN'.
(Ryou's Comment: Or you can just put your hands over your captured pieces and bow after your opponent.)

10.Please note Shogi is extremely traditional game and I hope my students in this lecture keeps the above rules very strictly when you will play Shogi game anytime. Because this is traditional beauty.

11. This is the common sense when people will learn Karate or Judo also.

JAPANESE SHOGI WORDS

2. The words of Movement
I will describe it all in English because ordinal Japanese can understand simple English.

Right - The right-hand side piece moves. (Migi)
Left - The left-hand side piece moves. (Hidari)
Side - The piece moves to side (Yoru)
Up --- The piece moves to up (Agaru)
Down - The piece moves to down (Sagaru)
Straight - The piece moves to straight up.(Sugu)
Back ----- The piece moves to back.(Hiku)

Exception: When you capture the opponent's Koma, we can say Do-Fu, Do-Kyo, Do-Kaku only etc.

The numbers on the left is the movement step. International Notation is a kind of Chess method. Shogi never uses such a notation. Every professionals explain that "my step No.28's78 Kyo-Naru was mistake" something like this way. Sente must be odd step number and Gote even numbers. For other special words, you can learn them step by step with me.

The merit of the Japanese Notation
-----------------------------------
1. You can communicate with any Japanese Ama./Pro. Players by this way very easily. So professionals are easy to teach you. On the other hands, they can not teach you under so called "International" notation.

2. You can read any Japanese Shogi books after you study a few more Kanji characters. If you already play by actual Kanji Koma, you don't need to study more. This is all.

3. What I want all of you is to become SHODAN (1-dan) as soon as possible. You can learn all necessary formula from books. I believe you can surely do it after a few lectures of mine to get the black belt within 3-4 years.

4. I and other members on other famous Shogi page will use this kind of notation under the recommendation of JSA.

5. If you can write your score (Kifu) completely, I can give you Class 4 strength at least. Class 4 means that you can beat me under the handicap of two pcs (without Hisha and Kaku) for all the games. If you can play Blind game, you are already becoming 2 dan or more.
(Ryou's Comment: This is not true, regarding the part about you having a Class 4 strength if you can write your own kifu. But I think it is true that you have a 2-dan strength if you can play a complete blind-Shogi game.)

6. In order to confirm your strength, we play together in new JAVA Shogi server, where you can know your real strength by playing with many of us. Unfortunately, nobody can use the"International" notation there. So to review your scores, we need to study this format. Otherwise, other strong amateurs or professionals can not give you any good suggestions even if they know how to write good English to you. Very few Japanese Player can write you with International notation.

If you really respect our culture and love SHOGI, Please study one hour to remember all the necessary words for above for your lifetime Shogi Hobby. If you don't have anytime to study them now, please just print this out and when you will be confused, you just refer it please.This is technical part but real good Shogi players respect the opponent with good manner and gentle modesty. Needless to say, you can not be so glad when you win the game in front of your opponent. Instead, you have to give and show your opponent very deep sympathy because he or she really would like to cry by losing the game. If your time allows for the review of the game, you have to consider with your opponent very carefully and try to find out any method that opponent could win if he or she moved with other way. This is gentlemen Shogi-Ship.

Frankly speaking, to be stronger or weaker is not so much important in Shogi. The attitude of the game create your own beauty and people will like you more. On the other hands, all strong Ama/Pro Players are strictly keeping good attitude for Shogi Play all the time without exception. This is the hint to be a skillful player. If you can not keep the way I mentioned all above, you are not qualified to be a skillful Shogi Player. It is very easy if you can think of the people's mind. You can also enter into "ZEN" world through Shogi later.

Anyway, please enjoy Shogi more.
(Ryou's Comment: This is the most important point of all the advices given. If you're only concern about winning and losing all the time, but instead did not try to enjoy Shogi even if you did lose, you're not qualify to call yourself a Shogi player.)

Get Ready for the First War!

internet is still down so I can't really update about AISEP. Anyways here's a small update that I think Malaysia Shogi players should be interested.

In this coming Sunday (13th September 2009), there is going to be a Shogi Festival held in 'Japan Club Kuala Lumpur', which is prepared by Japanese. Kenji Kobayashi, a 9-dan professional Shogi player from Japan, will be making his appearance. Here's a small summary of the event:

An Easy Guess

Hey,

my attachments are finally over so try and guess what I have been doing over my holidays. It'll be an easy guess, I promise! =P

I will be returning to Malaysia on this coming Saturday (25th July) and will head straight for Japan on the next day. My preparations for AISEP have been going smoothly but I still need to polish my Shogi skills this week!

A little note to everyone that I am not participating in Yingde Cup this year, which is held in Shanghai, because the air ticket's expensive and I am going to be busy with my new semester.

So what are my plans when my new semester begins? First I would like to 're-study' my old Shogi books to master the basics. A year is going to pass soon and I haven't achieve 2-dan amateur yet! =/

Secondly I might be going to give some Shogi 'coaching' at an university, depending on how passionate the club members are. I think I will have to give more thoughts about it before I agree to teach Shogi.

Thoughts for the Moment

Hey,

Sorry that I haven't been updating this blog for a long time. Internship has really kept me busy and I haven't been able to spend some time with Shogi. ='(

Without concentrating on Shogi for the past few weeks (although I did read the lastest professional players' kifus everyday), I have been using these times to reflect on myself regarding my skills in Shogi.

It has been more than half a year since I've said that I'm going to achieve 2-dan strength within this year. I strongly believe that I have improved alot since the beginning of the year, making me a more stable 1-dan player. Now I am able to solve Tsume-Shogi without the use of equipments and programs.

Because of Shogi, my level of concentration has improve drastically that I was able to focus on a specific task without being distracted. With my current level of concentration, I was able to spend more time to search for the best move in Shogi. I have always hope that I could spend more time for a move because I would want to play a Shogi game with 8 hours thinking time per player. I feel excited if I could play a 2-day Shogi game, just like a professional match!

Whenever I don't have any Shogi books with me, I would thought up a Shogi scenario and try to experiment a few moves in my 'mind'.

It has been seven months, and I still feel that I am a weak Shogi player. Am I able to achieve 2-dan this year, and show people my strength who have high expectations for me?

There is only a week left for my attachment. I really hope I can start spending more time on Shogi as soon as my attachment is over.

Nevertheless, my love for Shogi will be always.

Industrial Training Days

Hey,

it seems that I am still heavily involve with Shogi eventhough I am busy with my industrial training (or attachment). I guess I can't really live life without Shogi. *smiles*

When I was given my own computer to use for my work, I immediately change the wallpaper to Shogi. A lot of my colleagues ask me what it is and I told them it's Shogi. Fortunately, one of my colleagues is interested in learning so I taught her a few basics! Unfortunately we are always busy so we never had a game against each other. I really hope I was able to play a game with her someday.

Whenever I have free time during my working hours, I would take out my Shogi books and read it. Why waste my time doing nothing when I can use the time to improve my Shogi? But I really hope my boss don't mind me reading Shogi books during working hours. =P

Looks like I will be going to Japan afterall!

Honestly, I am in tears of happiness right now. For the past few days, I have been contacting Hidetchi regarding the conditions for international players to become a full-time (or full-fledge) professional Shogi player in Japan. Despite of my selfishness, he went through all the trouble of contacting a professional regarding it and manage to obtain few informations about it. Below are the conditions to apply for Shoreikai entrance exam:

Before 22 years old:
You can apply for 1-dan of Shoureikai.
Requirements to which are,
- Being the winner or the 2nd winner of a Japanese amateur's national tournament. (Foreigner's participating in these tournaments will require being the winner of an international tournament first)

After 23 years old:
You can only apply for 3-dan of Shoureikai.
Requirements to which are,
- Being the winner of a Japanese amateur's national tournament in the very year of application.
- Recommendation by a professional player

Although it won't be a professional certificate, at least I can start working my way from 3-dan and achieve 4-dan professional in the following year. Although it is very tough just to get an application for the entrance exam, I am going to work hard to achieve that goal first! Nothing is going to scare and stop me from becoming professional player no matter how difficult the path is! With Hidetchi's help, now I can see a small glitter of hope in front of me to become a professional player. But, will I be able to achieve it? Am I going to be successful in achieving my dream of becoming a professional player? Am I going to regret becoming a professional player? I don't really know the answer and deep down in my heart I am a little scared but I am going to break through every wall that stands in my way and hope that the Shogi gods are watching over me.

Hey all,

it seems that there are more and more 'Go players' trying to learn Shogi from me. Everytime I have a game with them, I would give them a handicapped of two lances, bishop and a rook.

It is a great honour to teach Hock Doong, who was one of the strong Go players in the club. My last game with him has been memorable and special, as he purposely neglected giving Go lectures to his students just to play a Shogi game with me. After playing so many handicapped games, I felt that it was this last game with him that I have learn alot more about Shogi's tactics and 'direction of play'.

(In case you're wondering why I have an extra gold in hand is because I've managed to capture his silver and then I trade it off for his gold.)

Hock Doong's main strategy is to break into my base at least once, and also to make my gold on 3f retreat back to my base, since I always use the gold as my main attacking piece in handicapped games. Therefore he drop his pawn in 3e, which I have to retreat my gold to 4f, and he drop another one in 4e. Although I felt that the pawn in 3e is a free capture for my gold, I retreat it back to 4g, as I fear he would play P4f! The move itself may not look threatening, but if I retreat my gold back to 3f again, he would have played P4g+, which lures my king into a more vulnerable square. Therefore I played G4g (main move lines: P'3e, G4f, P'4e, G4g). Therefore his strategy of making my gold retreat back to my base is a success. EDIT: Even if I do capture the pawn on 4f with the silver, my position in the center would be weaken too much and there would be more opportunities for white to break into my base, especially when he has a silver in hand. Sorry for not including this information.

Now that my gold won't be able to advance up the board to get into his territory, I managed to find a vulnerable spot in his territory that I might still be able to win the game - the 7b square. I drop my gold in the 7b square, hoping I could capture his silver. "Why would you trade off your gold for a silver?", you might asked. Since the only way for the silver to escape is 5a, I capture it with my gold and at the same time check the king. And if the king recaptures the gold on 5a, I can drop my silver in 3b, threatening to capture either a knight or a gold, or even the bishop in the future. Unfortunately he thought I would try to capture his bishop by moving Sx3a+ so he move away his bishop after I've dropped my silver, but to his surprised I was aiming to captured the gold on 4c, threatening to checkmate his king and kill the bishop at the same time. (main move lines: G'7b, S5a, G6a, P'8f, Px8f, Rx8f, P'8g, R8e, Gx6a, Kx6a, S'3b, B4d, Sx4c+)

To his disappointment, I've won the game without him entering my base once.

Yesterday my best friend Chen Xinwen decided to challenge Alex in a game of Shogi. To my surprise, this is their last position of their last game.

Due to verbal information from Xinwen, Alex did not make any effort of mating Xinwen and only aim for entering king. However Xinwen resigned the game, which he shouldn't have since Alex has made 5 illegal moves in this game without the both of them noticing!

The pawns at the end of the board MUST be promoted since it is a forced promotion. Failed to do so is an illegal move. Also, he dropped two pawns at the same column twice! Alex would have been lost a long time ago...

Despite the 5 illegal moves made by Alex, I would like to honour this game as the "Great I-Go Escape", as this long game has been played by two strong Go players who both have made a rare double entering king.

Alex is really a great player that I have looked forward to play Shogi with. I remember that my second handicapped Shogi game with him has been a great horror to me - he immediately played a complete Anaguma, which I don't think I have a chance at all since I don't have a bishop, rook and lances to break his Anaguma! He is also the first player who managed to beat me in handicapped Shogi games twice in a row. However he tends to make an illegal double pawn drop in the game. If he can overcome this bad habit, I'm sure that he will be a greater player in Shogi.

I will be returning to Brunei this Friday for two months so I'm feeling a little sad that I couldn't play Shogi with them. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to play Shogi with them again two months later!

Short Update (UPDATED)

Hey,

this is just a short summary about what I have done in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur on last Saturday.

I taught another two girls how to play Shogi! Once again I had two different games at the same time and achieve victory! When the two girls were playing Shogi against each other, one girl had to leave so I have to play her share too. Her position is almost losing, but I still took out two lances and rook from the play (my opponent has already captured the bishop beforehand). Still I managed to counterattack and win back the game, despite having a huge disadvantage.

After that a 4-dan Go player challenge me to a game of Shogi, with a handicapped of two lances, rook and a bishop. Amazingly he immediately broke into my territory and checkmate me due to my wrong calculations. But I have to say that he is really an amazing player so it's no doubt that I have lost to him. I hope I can play more games with him.

Once again the Japanese man had challenge me to a game of Shogi. He played Central Rook Opening (Nakabisha) again, so I too followed. Knowing that he can't beat me in a double Nakabisha, he changed his tactic to Third File Rook Opening (Sangenbisha). Never studied how to counter a Sangenbisha strategy, I immediately lose to him, which his castle is still intact (though I have managed to mess his castle up a little). Although I lost to him, I do not feel angry towards him or feel ashamed of myself. Instead, I feel that I should study up more Shogi strategies if I'm going to achieve 2-dan this year. Thanks to this Japanese man, he taught me that my Shogi studies are still not enough and I should work harder to improve in Shogi.

I am also not ashamed to tell you all that I have lost. Afterall, playing Shogi is about enjoying, not about winning or losing. If I do not enjoy the game after I have lost, I have no right to say that I want to be a professional Shogi player. It is the enjoyment of the game that have made me decided to aim to be a professional Shogi player in the first place so I should work hard for the sake of my beloved game - Shogi.

Killing Two Birds with One Stone

Hey all,

Maybe it's not really killing two birds with one stone. It seems that there are more and more players in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur that are interested in playing Shogi (although they're not considering being an active player). I'm quite happy that there are players (non-Japanese) that I can actually teach and play Shogi. There are a few players who wanted to play against me so I decided to play two games of Shogi at the same time, with a handicapped of two lances, bishop and rook! I've played a total of 4 games against them and I achieved total victory! Unfortunately I lost the last two games because I was playing two games (at the same time) against a beginner (with handicapped of two lances, bishop and rook) and a 2-dan Japanese player (with no handicap). I should have just focus on my game against the Japanese player so that I wouldn't have faced a very humiliating defeat, which he immediately broke into my territory and checkmated me in less than 50 moves.

I have been playing a lot of Shogi games against the Japanese player (I forgot his name) for the past few weeks. Two weeks ago we were playing games of 'best out of three'. The first game is a normal Yagura game with Bishop exchange, which I aim for a right edge attack and emerge a total victory over him. In our second game he decided to use his favourite Joseki (opening) against me: Central Rook Opening. I was very unfamiliar with this Joseki so he immediately attack my weak left base with a silver, getting a total victory over me this time. In our last game, he played Central Rook Opening again. After trading off our bishops, I made a weird bishop drop at 2a square, which he got greedy and decides to come after my bishop. Fortunately I made a right edge attack again, sacrificing my bishop for a gold, and finally checkmated him. The last game was really a tough fight because he broke into my base first but fortunately I made an entering king which have secure my solid win over him.

After having a win of 2 out of 3 over him, he decides to have a game with me again yesterday. As I have mention earlier, I lost my first game because I was concentrating two games at the same time. In our second game (which I am only focusing on this game), he once again used his favourite Joseki: the Central Rook Opening. I'm actually a little annoyed about him always playing this Joseki so I have decided to irritate him a little, by playing his favourite Joseki against him: a Double Central Rook opening game! He was quite surprised when my silver was a move earlier to participate the battle in the 5e square. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with this Joseki so he actually have a pawn advantage over me after we have traded our Silvers and Bishops. Worst, my King's castle is a mess because I wanted to protect the 5g square, while he has already made an incomplete Mino Castle. I couldn't really remember the positions but I think it look something like this...

This is not the exact position. I do know is that I made a brilliant (to me it's brilliant) bishop drop at 3d, trying to attack his weak 2c and 4c square, then he drop his silver at 3b and I promote my pawn, trying to capture his rook. I was really lacking a pawn material and also a risk of the silver drop at 4e so I decided to just take my chances and break into his base, which is a success. I keep on mating him until I've made a cool move to checkmate him. Can anyone guess what it is? It's a mate in 3 moves without a silver drop. (The rest of the pieces have been remove because I couldn't remember the position)

Anyways back to the topic. Yesterday was my first time playing two games at the same time so I am quite happy that I can still concentrate well during those games. It was a little exciting and fun for me and I really enjoy the thrill. I hope I will be able to play handicapped Shogi games against 9 players at the same time one day!!!

1 minute Shogi

Hey all,

Last year back in Beijing (during the participation of AISEP), I remember there's a night where Kazuma and Taichi Nakamura had a "1-minute Shogi" game. It was really exciting and fun to watch, and I always wanted to post a video about it.

Anyways last night I happen to stumble upon this video in Youtube, which shows a game of 1-minute Shogi. I always wanted to try 1-minute Shogi but unfortunately I did not try it back in Beijing because I was only 7 kyu back then and Kazuma and Taichi are very strong players.

Mr. Kunihiko is highly interested in setting up Shogi club in Malaysia unfortunately he has contacted the wrong person because Waq (Zaid) is an active Go player, not an active Shogi player! In Japan where the atmosphere surrounding the Internet is excellent, the Internet is very effective in spreading Shogi. In the international field human presence should be essential at the initial stage. However, I found an exception in Beijing this year. A Malaysian student participated on his own. In the circumstances where Shogi is totally unknown, he learnt it through the Internet, improved himself and came to the meeting. Thanks to the Internet, an amateur of the Shogi was born. There exists a possibility that Shogi spreads in an unimaginable circumstance.

I am very happy that Mr. Habu mentioned about me in the interview, although he did not say my name. Well, it is true that I did not know about Shogi until I saw Japanese play Shogi in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur. Having the urge to know how Shogi plays, I went home that night and start learning Shogi using the internet. Although I did learn how to play Shogi using the internet, but I rarely play Shogi games against human players. The only games I've played on the internet are against AI (Ham Shogi) and against human players when I was still a beginner (about 15 kyu). I did not play against human players again until after the participation of AISEP (Asian Intercultural Shogi Exchange Program), which I was playing against a Beijing friend for leisure and teaching. I think it has been more than six months since I last played against a human player in the internet.

I personally hate playing Shogi while staring at the monitor because if I concentrate too much it will actually hurt or strain my eyes. However I still use my laptop to play Shogi only for leisure or blitz, which the game will normally only last less than 5 or 10 minutes. It's no wonder why I have never participate in any "internet Shogi tournaments" mainly because it hurts my eyes and the match usually starts in midnight.

Back in Beijing last year, during Mr. Habu's talk, I remember he once said that it is impossible to improve Shogi skills/techniques without the supervision of a teacher/sensei. Even if the player do improve he will never achieve dan-level or become a professional. I think it was during that time that I have made a big resolution to prove that I can improve alot just by self-teaching myself and also without a sensei. America and Europe countries are very lucky to have their own sensei to teach them how to play Shogi but in Malaysia there is not even a single Shogi professional (or maybe he's hiding) so it's hard to find myself a sensei. But I want to prove to the Shogi community that even without a sensei I can get stronger, solely on passion, dedication and hard-work. Becoming 1-dan in a year without a sensei is a great achievement for me, therefore I'm going to continue to work hard to become a Shogi professional one day.

Lastly, a quote from Habu:

I have copies of Shogi Sekai since last year and you don't see me going insane. Hmm...

As a 1-dan Shogi player...

Hey all,

it has almost been two months since I became a 1-dan player. So I have been doing quite alot of thinking about how I should further improve my skills as a 1-dan player, and also to achieve the strength of 2-dan this year. After giving much thoughts, I had came up with a few ways and been practising it since early February. They are:

1. solving tsume-Shogi (Shogi mating problems) without Shogi equipments.
When I was a beginner, I would set up the position in my tsume-Shogi books with my Shogi sets and tried to solve them. But now I would tried to solve the problems without using any Shogi equipments or programs at all. I believe this will help me develop my imaginations better and would definitely help me alot during a game which sometimes require me to think more than 5 moves ahead. Not only did it improve my imagination skills, it actually improves my concentration too.

2. Reading Shogi books about fundamentals/basics.
I have actually finish reading up a book about the basics eg. why moving gold to G7H during a rook's pawn attack etc. Although I already read it when I was a beginner, I feel that I should master it again to strengthen my fundamentals.

3. Mastering all the Joseki (Openings/fundamentals)
I have completed "Art of Shogi" a year ago, but I think I should read them again to improve my Joseki... although I think it is impossible for me to master all of them.

4. Reading professional kifus (game records) everyday.
I have been reading kifus played by professional Shogi players almost everyday to try and grasp what the professionals are thinking to improve my strategy ideas.

5. Predicting the next moves.
Every time I read professional kifus I will try to guess what the next move will be the best. If my suggested move is bad, I will ask myself why it was a bad move.

6. Watching kifus played by amateur players.
By watching kifus played by beginners or amateur players, I will try to find the best move in the game or find the mistake made by the players so I will not repeat the same mistake in my own game.

7. Choosing a playing style.
Now that I'm a 1-dan player, I think it's time for me to choose whether I should be a static rook player, or a ranging rook player. Therefore I have been trying different sorts of Joseki against my opponents to see which playing style suits me best. Although I haven't decide on which style I should use, but I think I'm more of a static rook player but I'm still not sure of my choice yet.

With these seven ways, I believe I will become stronger in a short period of time. Nevertheless, I will try my best to achieve 2-dan this year!

First Game Review

Sorry that I haven't been updating much. Basically nothing much has happened except me reading Shogi books. Since I don't really know what else to talk, I'm going to post up someone's game (definitely NOT mine) that I have reviewed recently. To remind everyone again, I only have a strength of 1-Dan amateur so please do not expect a professional review from me. If any Shogi players have any suggestions, opinions, ideas or complains, please do so in the comments link. I hope more Shogi players can discussed about this game with me.

Before posting up the review, I hope that the player is not offended by me for posting up his kifu (game records) without asking his permission first. Nevertheless here's the review done by me:

Sente: Spear v1.4 - level 2
Gote: Human Player

This move signals three meanings. (a) Prevent trade of Bishop, (b) Trying to play a ranging rook, or (c) trying to make a Yagura without trading bishops.

3. P6F S4B

This move could signal proably a ranging rook (most probably) or a Yagura.

4. R6H

Since opponent is playing a ranging rook, Gote have two choices: (a) play an anaguma by S3C and later a S2B, or (b) playing a double ranging rook.

4. .... G6B

Not much of a comment on this move but I personally think Gote should play G5B, S6B, S5C for an attacking formation. Playing G5B also helps Gote to complete the "Complete Anaguma' in a move faster. Then again, I cannot say that this is a bad move.

5. G(6I)5H

I realise that the lastest version of Spear is weaker than the older version. Normally Spear would perfer to move it's King first, since it's the basics of the basics in Joseki. Or S3H, signalling a mino castle.

It's too early to play this move for Spear.

Again, this is a very bad move for Spear/Sente. I have never seen Spear/Sente made such a bad move before. Spear should move B7G as this is the basics of a ranging rook. If not, Gote will gain an upper hand in breaking into Sente's base.

Not exactly a bad move but Gote should take this opportunity to punish Sente's bad move by P8F! ....Px8F (forced move) Rx8F B7G and Rx8I+! It's already a huge advantage for Gote as Gote have a promoted Rook and an extra material (knight) in hand!

A senseless move as Spear/Sente should try to cover its mistake by B7G!

Again, Gote should try to exploit Sente's weakness by P8F.

Another senseless move.

Bishop has no chance to promote it and it's a waste of turn.

Remarks and Opinions: Sente's joseki is horrible however at the end game it's strategy of defense is good. As for Gote, he failed to realise his attack in the early of the game, therefore he should improve his concentration. Gote should seriously practise ALOT OF Tsume Shogi since he have missed too many checkmate opportunities! Improving concentration will not only improve Gote's tsume shogi but also his gameplay!

Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm very sorry that I did not update my blog for a very long time. This is mainly because my new semester has begun and I'm too busy with my semester and my life.

During my holidays in December I thought I could finish up at least three Shogi books but unfortunately I only finished up one because I was asked by my parents to help them build up a website, which has almost took up all of my leisure time. Aside from being busy, I do tend to read Shogi books whenever I have a short break inbetween my hectic life.

I am happy to announce that I am finally 1-DAN!!! WOOHOO! Finally a dream come true! I was playing against the president of the Shogi Club in Kuala Lumpur, who has the strength of about 5-Dan amateur. We played Yagura Joseki (opening or fundamentals) but because I have forgotten about the Joseki, I tried to play the opening with concentration and understanding. My opening turns out well as both of us have already created Kin-Yagura (Gold Fortress) and he was a step ahead to attack my base with his bishop on the left side of the board (I am sente, or black player). Without knowing what to do next, I bring my rightside silver to attack the bishop on the leftside of the board. It turns out well when we exchange silvers but I made a fatal mistake that have almost cost me the game - being greedy. I immediately drop my silver, trying to take his rook on the 82 (or 8B) square. He dropped his silver too, trying to take my rook but he has one extra turn than me. Next, he keeps on attacking my castle and I keep on defending. When his attack finally runs out, I surprised him that I was actually destroying his castle! Unfortunately I did not successfully defeat him because I made two fatal mistakes. My attack was one move late. If only I did not make two of those mistakes I would have probably won him. Though I lost to him, I was happy with my performance. Remember back in July I was playing against an old man in University Malaya during the Japan Language Festival? It was that old man! Back then I couldn't even touch his base, but now I almost checkmate him! He was amaze at my performance and ask me what level I am. I told him that I was ranked 3-kyu and he told me that I actually have the strength of 1-Dan amateur! I was happy to be told that I am 1-Dan! My dream has finally achieved after such a long period of hard work and studies!

Few days ago I received a comment from someone in this blog that he wants me to teach him Shogi. I really don't mind teaching beginners how to play Shogi but his request was different. He wants me to teach him how to improve in Shogi! I never have anyone teaching me Shogi before so I don't really know what to teach him. But I'll do my best to improve his Shogi! The only annoying problem is that he is staying in Portugal, which has 8 hours of difference between our time. It will be difficult for me to find time to teach him Shogi especially I have to wake up 6.30 a.m. the next day since the only time we're both using the internet are during the midnight (my time). I think the only free time to teach him is during the weekends.

I guess that's all. To end this post, I will talk about my New Year Resolutions!

My new year resolutions are:

1. Achieved 2-Dan amateur within this year!

2. Read up at least 3 psychology books.

3. Write at least 3 stories this year.

Shogi Festival in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur! (Report)

Hey all,

Before I begin to talk about Shogi Festival, which was held in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur today, I would like to show the book that I have purchase via internet which has cost me roughly around RM 100.

It has 118 pages and I found it very useful for beginners because it teaches us the things we should be thinking while playing Shogi. Unless "Art of Shogi", it teaches you basic joseki (openings or fundamentals) but not too much about what we should be thinking. Therefore it is very good to have Habu's Words for Shogi players.

Alright, it's time for the report on Shogi Festival!

Report on Shogi Festival

Yesterday I was told that today Shogi Festival will be held in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur. One of the Japanese told me that it was starting around noon but I thought it was just a normal festival but it turns out that they were having tournaments!

A knockout tournament! I didn't knew they were having tournaments otherwise I would have join them! I shouldn't have went there at 2pm. And this is the first time in my life I've seen so many Japanese playing Shogi in Japan Club!

These are the giveaways and prizes. There are two types of categories. One is for adults and another is for children. Naoki has already finished his game so I have a game with him. Unfortunately I lost. =( But I knew why I have lost. =)

After the tournament has ended, We were given by a small lecture on tsume Shogi by a 9-Dan pro Mr. Kenji Kobayashi. After the small talk a gift was given to the club leader as a small present...

This present actually has all the signatures of the Meijins! Do not look lightly on this prize. It is actually worth more than RM 3,000!!!

Two tables are set up and Mr. Kobayashi is going to play against 7 players at the same time, including me! He gave me two piece handicapped, Rook and Bishop. The game lasted for a long time and I lost. After all the games Mr. Kobayashi gave evalution on everyone about how well they played. Naoki has the strength of 2-Dan amateur while I have the strength of 3 kyu only. That explains why I have lost to Naoki earlier. Looks like my days of exams have really deteriorate my Shogi skills. =( But I remember Naoki was playing against handicapped of Rook, Bishop and two Lances... Fortunately Mr. Kobayashi praised me that I have talent and might be a genius. I have never been so proud of myself in my life. =D

After that it's time to hand the prizes to the winners!

I was the only Malaysian there so I feel a little awkward because I couldn't speak Japanese nor fully understand it. But I'm very grateful that they're being friendly and tried to talk to me in English. =)

Hey all,

Today's 28th Nov so that means... exams are finally over!!! WOOHOOOOO!

With my semester ended I can finally play Shogi the whole day! Actually I'm playing Shogi at this moment and I'm taking a break right now to type this entry. I have been learning for Shogi for two straight hours so I still have 6 hours ago! It's great that I can learn Shogi full time, with at least 8 hours per day. Call me crazy, but that's how I love so much about Shogi!

On the night before my last exam, I couldn't sleep at all. Not that I was worried about my exams just because I have to take two different papers on the same day, the main reason is I was too excited about playing Shogi after exams! I found it a little scary that my obsession of Shogi is too strong but... I love this feeling! I did not force myself to learn 8 hours of Shogi. I was actually spending it just like my past-time/leisure! The sense of learning new strategies, discovering new ideas, playing against myself - it feels so great and refreshing!

Tomorrow is Saturday and I'm going to Japan Club Kuala Lumpur to play a few games of Shogi. It has been a very long time since I last visited JCKL. Hope my skills improve!

Alright everyone, I'm going to resume learning Shogi now. Take care everyone!

It's....It's finally here!!!

Hey all,

after waiting for another week, I woke up early at 9 a.m. to check my mailbox. It was not there. I have started to doubt that the online purchase might have been a failure so I went back into my house to take my morning bath and breakfast. At around 1 p.m., my mobile phone mysteriously rang. I was trying to get a hold of it but it stopped ringing before I could. Although the missed call was from a friend, I stupidly thought it as a sign that my book has arrive. So I went to check the mailbox again and there it was, Habu's Words!

After waiting for three weeks it has finally arrived!!! Words can't describe how happy I am to receive this book. I wished I could have taken a photo with the book but unfortunately my camera broke down. =(

Although I am happy that I've receive my copy of Habu's Words, but I can't use it now. WHY? This is because exams around the corner and I don't have time for Shogi! =( *Mumbles and curses at the college exams* Anyways my last day of exam is on 27th November so I'm really looking forward to study Shogi with Habu's Words on that day! =3

Hey all,

it's been more than a month. Actually I haven't played Shogi for almost a month. It's not that I have finally got bored of Shogi, it's just that my college assignments and test are too much that if I play Shogi it will lessen the amount of my time focusing in my studies and thus it will make my results worser.

I feel irritate that I can't spend more time on Shogi than my college studies. I hope I can focus more on Shogi again once this semester is over.

However I still do at least one tsume Shogi per day and read Shogi magazines whenever I'm having dinner.

Experiences and Flexibility

Hey all,

Yesterday I was asked by one of Malaysia's strongest Go player to play Shogi at his house. He was a chess fanatic, so it's no wonder why he would want to play a game of Shogi with me. We even made an agreement that I would come to his house almost everyday just to play a few games of Shogi. Knowing that he has more than 10 years of chess experiences, I decided to accept his suggestion of coming to his house during the weekdays. But why would I accept his suggestion eventhough he's just a beginner? The main reason is because the level of concentration and strategies that he has accumulated from his chess experiences has made him a formidable opponent that I can practise on.

I have been playing Shogi for a year only by spending more time on books and lesser time on games. Eventhough I have improve a lot just by studying, I will still be defeated by my opponent if the Shogi's joseki (or unknown territory) is different from what I have anticipated. Therefore the main purpose of me accepting his suggestion is to gain more experiences, and also to improve my flexibility of countering all sorts of strategies in the game. Not only that it will help me to develop my adaption if I were to play at different surroundings and against players.

Nevertheless playing Shogi almost everyday will surely improve my skills and concentration (or calmness) alot.

A shogi player's rant

"What? Shogi again?"

Everytime I read Shogi-related books or play a game of Shogi with my friend, my acquaintances or my friends would say the same words to me. But what they don't know is, everytime they said the very words it would make me feel depressed. Very depressed. Not only that, they would give me this weird look and make sarcasm remarks about it... or just ignore me. Maybe they're just youngsters, or they didn't understand my dream to become a professional Shogi player. Even if I did explain why I work so hard improving my Shogi skills, they would think I'm an idiot chasing after a stupid dream.

Hate to admit it but chess is an un-cool game after all. Not like basketball, badminton, bowling, bowling, swimming, Counter-Strike, Defense of the Ancients (DotA) and etc etc. As long as the activities involved with physical sports and video games, it is considered as a 'cool' thing. Shogi is not a physical sport nor a video game - it is a board game or most 'cool' youngsters would prefer to call it 'bored game'. I myself even do all these 'cool' things before I encounter Shogi. After I have gotten serious about Shogi, I spend most of my time with Shogi and rarely with these 'cool' activities. So why am I playing Shogi since it's un-cool? To be honest, I have no idea. I don't even know why I want to become a professional Shogi player in the first place. What I do know is that's what my heart desires and I want to follow it. Also I have a great passion in Shogi, which itself should have answered why I'm working so hard improving my Shogi skills.

In Malaysia, people are actually looking down on chess games - except chess-lovers. They think it's boring and a waste of time and most importantly 'un-cool'. It just pisses me off when people actually do give bad comments about it. If you're not fond of chess then please let me ask you back the same questions. Why are you playing tennis? It improves your physical strength and endurance? Why it's almost the same thing as Shogi! By playing Shogi we're actually improving our thinking abilities and concentration! What did you just say? By playing tennis it keeps you in shape? But playing Shogi helps us study well in studies! But did you know it's almost impossible to become a professional tennis (or any other sports) player even if you work hard on it? And when you grow old I'll doubt you will have the same strength/skills as you do when you're young. In Shogi, it is possible to become a professional if you work hard on it and your skills won't deterioate even when you grow old. Unless you are aiming to be an athlete, then I would have nothing to say against you.

Now to all the video gamers. Let me ask you something. How does a video game helps you in your life? Maple Story? DotA? Counter-Strike? Please tell me how. And I'm highly positive that you're not going to play the same game forever in your life. Video games are just something for you to waste away your leisure or boring times and does not benefit you in any ways. Well, except that you will get more friends/conversations since you're playing a temporary 'cool' game. Next time please think about the things you have done before commenting me about playing Shogi.

Enough questioning. But what I don't understand is why people think it's stupid every time I said I'm going to be a professional? It is something illegal? It is something stupid? It is something that is impossible to achieve? Or is it just because it is 'un-cool'? I actually have some people mocking at me just because I said it is my dream to become a professional. Shogi is a proper mind sport. Unless I said I'm going to be a yoyo professional or a 'Magic the Gathering' professional, then I would understand why people are laughing at me.

That's all for my rant. To all the chess-players in the world. Have you ever experience something similar like mine where people mock or tease you when you said you are going to become a professional chess player? Please share your thoughts and opinions with me.

Nevertheless I am going to continue chasing after my dream no matter what people said about Shogi.

The Sacrifice

Hey all,

Yesterday was Saturday so the obvious thing I would do is go to Japan Club and play Shogi. I was a little tired and have a slight headache so I didn't play too well in Shogi. In fact it was too lousy that I feel very ashamed of myself. "This is not my usual performance," I said to myself. Then I realised the huge factor that have affected my skills. It was my concentration.

But that's not all. By playing against a Japanese guy in JC made me realise that my Shogi studies are not enough. So what should I do if I have to improve my Shogi skills?

I have decided not to play anymore TV games after completing the PS2 game ".Hack". I personally think that TV games help me reduce my concentration skills so I would not have the patience to focus a games if it last for a long time. Not only that it was a total waste of time. I should have sacrifice it to play Shogi in the first place (but I have reduce my gaming time ever since I started Shogi).

Therefore from this day onwards I will not play anymore TV games or PC games if I have to become a professional Shogi player. I do not want to think that I have played Shogi for a year and have no improvement. This is my new resolve.

Hey all,

I would like to say that too many Shogi-related things have happened ever since I started playing Shogi so I'm dedicating this blog only on Shogi, my adventures, my opinions about Shogi and how the people in Malaysia feels about Shogi. Also, I have imported all my shogi-related events from my other blog to here so Shogi players could read my past progress and adventures. Anyways expect me to talk more Shogi-related stuffs in the future!

Since I don't really have that much time I will talk about the Japanese Language Festival in University of Malaya.

Actually when I just got back from AISEP in Beijing, I was asked by Tsuda-san, the person in-charge of promoting Shogi in UM (University of Malaya) and also one of the members of Shogi Club in Japan Club (http://www.jckl.org.my/), to help him because:

1. I love Shogi; and
2. I'm the only non-Japanese who can play Shogi.

I always wanted to help out people if there's a way to promote Shogi so I agreed to help him out.

On 27th July at 8.00 a.m. we gathered ourselves at the Japan Club and at 8.30 a.m. we went to UM together. Many Japanese were enthusiastic about teaching Shogi to the locals and I was one of them too. ^.^

We reached UM ten minutes later and to my surprise there are a lot of people attending the fair!

The people in the picture above are actually learning how to dance in Japanese style! ^.^ We quickly set up the Shogi sets and since there is still not many people in UM so the Japanese asked me to play a few games first.

This is Naoki and he's only 11-years old! He told me that he learn Shogi from his father and he's very strong! If I'm not mistaken he's about 1 or 2 kyu. He can defeat most of the old Japanese men in Japan Club!

This is me playing against Naoki! ^.^v We played three games and I won two games! ^.^v Actually before this I couldn't beat Naoki at all! But I'm glad I have improve so much that I can win Naoki! Anyways we have a lot of fun!

This is actually my first meeting with him and he is VERY VERY STRONG! I think he's about 2 or 3-dan. We have three games too and I cannot defeat him at all!

Too bad I did not ask for his name. I would very much like him to teach me a few things about Shogi since he is very strong! By the way, did you notice Shoshi-sensei's fan on the table? ^.^

This is me playing Shogi very seriously. LOL. I always wonder why I put my head on my hand when I'm thinking.

Anyways we have a lot of fun in UM. Some people actually find Shogi very hard to learn because it's hard to memorise the kanji on the Shogi pieces and they always forget how Gold (Kinsho) and Silver (Ginsho) moves.

Nevertheless I'm looking forward to help out again if there is another opportunity to promote Shogi!

Looking back at all these AISEP photos, I would like to say that I'm glad I've created such splendid memories during my stay in Beijing eventhough it's only three days. Words can't really describe my feelings as I look over all these photos again and again. They're really nice people, REALLY! It has really been fun hanging out with everyone! I really enjoy myself alot! I'm really looking forward to see them again in the coming future if there is ever a chance!

Back in Malaysia! (End of AISEP or Beijing)

Hi everyone!

Sorry that I didn't update regularly during my stay in Beijing. This is because I thought I get to use the internet in the hotel. And also I didn't know that the camera I've borrowed from my relative could only take 12 photos! So I didn't take too many photos! =( *Ahem* Anyways are you ready for a very lengthy talk about Shogi? Here goes!

FIRST DAY OF AISEP
On the first day of AISEP, I have to get up around 4.45am so I can took a cab ride at 6.00am. Reached airport around 7am and check myself in. I found myself reaching the airport too early so I've decided to take a few photos about the cool architecture I've seen...

I personally think it's cool that the steel bars are used to surround the trees. Anyways by the time I'm done fascinating at these great architecture it's finally time for me to board my airplane. BTW, look at this very cool TV!

It takes about 6 hours to fly to Beijing from Malaysia. So basically to waste all those 6 hours, I spend the first few hours sleeping. Couldn't get a comfortable sleep I've decided to watch the movie that they aired in the airplane. "Jumper", eventhough I've watched the movie twice I've decided to watched it again to kill the boredom. Thank god the movie last two hours so else I could have start screaming boredom in the airplane like a mad chicken.

Beijing International Airport is weird. After the airplane had landed, it actually circle around the tracks for about 15min! I mean I want to get off the airplane already! Stop driving around the tracks you dumb airplane! Right, as soon as I get off the airplane I actually found someone holding a sign written "AISEP" as I walked past the entrance to retrieve my luggage. I actually giggled because it looked a little silly holding the sign standing there. Without wasting any time I quickly retrieve my luggage and approach the man holding the sign.

He is Stephen, a Beijing guy who can actually speak Japanese! When I first approach me he actually speak English to me. Seeing that he has a lot of difficulty speaking English, I told him he could speak Chinese but he still continue to speak English anyway. ^^

By talking to Stephen, I found out that I was the last person from AISEP who landed in Beijing! We quickly catch a cab and proceed to our destination. It takes about 45 min to reach JingLun Hotel. And can you imagine that there is a traffic jams on the airport highway? And we Malaysians always complain that our traffic jams are terrible. Looks like Beijing bests us.

I found that the architecture in Beijing are really amazing! I wished I could have taken more photos about it! (I couldn't because I can only take 12 photos, remember?) Then we reached JingLun Hotel, drop my stuffs and luggage in the room bla bla bla and then walked to the Japan Foundation to begin our introduction among ourselves.

Everyone is just chilling out till the presentation could begin. It's really great that there are about 20 people joining AISEP. Let's see.. um... ten Japanese, one Singaporean, one Malaysian (that's me, duh!), one French, one Hong Kong and six Beijing. Wait... maybe I counted wrongly. Nevermind. Presentation went smooth and well and then when everything's done we're off to dinner!

YUM! YUM! Doesn't it look delicious? I hate to admit it but I personally did not enjoy my dinner. Why? Because I'm very picky about food and all these food have some sort of strange taste. But I'm very sure the rest of the people enjoy their dinner alot.

And the ones behind this AISEP guy...

Yup, like I said, there's around 20 people so we occupied two long tables for dinner!

Kazuki and Chen (not sure of the real name) . Kazuki is actually a very cool and cute guy. I bet that a lot of girls would probably go after him. LOL. As for Chen, I think he has been playing Shogi ever since he was seven. But I've never played a game against him so I don't really know how strong he is. Hmm...

After the dinner we went back to the hotel and it's SHOGI TIME! WOOPEE DOO! I actually have four games that night. against Japanese. All I could say is they're really really strong! Obviously they're strong, they're about three or four dan! And I'm even playing against the female amateur Meijin! They sure did beat the crap out of me! And we kept playing Shogi until 3am and we have to wake up at 6.30am...

SECOND DAY OF AISEP
Woke up at 6.30am, bath, eat breakfast in the hotel's restaurant and then we went back to Japan Foundation to do a presentation about Shogi in our own country. Well, they expected me to talk about Shogi in Malaysia and since Shogi is not very well known in Malaysia so I've decided to talk about my encounter with Shogi. I don't think I'm going to mention it again because it's going to be super lengthy if I did. I've already mention about my first encounter with Shogi in my previous journal anyway. =P Then when noon arrives we took a bus and went to a restaurant called "WAHAHA". Yes, I don't know how Chinese could get more and more creative with names. But I have to say that their food was fantastic! I sure help myself to the food alot! After filling our stomach to it's fullest, we once again took a bus and went somewhere near the Olympic Stadium!

After a few good shots near Olympic Stadium our next destination is Yuan Tan Park to see a bunch of old men playing Xianqi, cards and even Go! Everyone in AISEP is highly interested in them playing Chinese Chess, while I personally find Xianqi boring. So instead I went and have a look at them playing Go. It was quite fun looking at people playing Go. After half an hour later it's time to meet our legendary man -

It's Mr. Habu Yoshiharu! One of the strongest Shogi player in the world and have magnificent strategies up his sleeve! He actually have a small tour around the chess institute. Here's more photos of him:

My photo taken with him! OH MY GOD! I sound just like a fangirl. EEEKKKK! He looks so cute and handsome. LOL. After some few photo shoots with Mr. Habu we return back to our hotel for a grand party!

We actually have a lot of Japanese guests at our party and this party was to commemorate the success of AISEP and we have to dress very formal for a very high class party. Here's a picture of me and my friends...

After having my dinner, I once again approach Habu and...

let him signed on my Shogi board! WOOHOO! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! After that we actually get to have a small talk session with Mr. Habu! =D

Below are some questions that I have personally asked Mr. Habu:
Me: Why do you want to become a professional Shogi player and what motivates you to continue playing Shogi?
Habu: Well, I started playing Shogi when I was a little kid and because I love Shogi a lot and without giving too much thoughts and consideration I just became a professional Shogi player by the time I have realised it. So what motivates me to continue playing Shogi is I'm looking forward to see new kinds of tactics or strategies I would discover during my title match. That itself could motivates me to continue playing Shogi alot.
Me: Instead of dreaming to become a professional Shogi player, is there any other dreams that you have ever thought of?
Habu: Well, we all have different sorts of dreams. But if you're talking about recently, about six or seven years ago I've dreamt of becoming a baseball player.
Me: So do you have any dreams that you hope to achieve in the future?
Habu: Well, when I was around 17 years old I was playing against a 60's year old Shogi player. Normally we, as professional players, have to take up some time to make our next move however he could just instantly play a move with accuracy and strength. He doesn't need to waste any time at all to think of how to response to my move. So I really do hope I can achieve capabilities like his in the future which I don't need to waste any time for my next move.

THIRD DAY OF AISEP
Woke up at 6.30am, bath, eat breakfast in the hotel's bla bla bla but this time we have to go to Japan Foundation and set up the chairs for an interview with Mr. Habu. After a few hours of talk from Mr. Habu, we clean up the place, eat our bento lunch and prepare for our final presentation about why chess is interesting. After the presentation and everything we went to a restaurant to celebrate our great success. We have tons of fun and games to play. Kazuki is really great person to lead us to play games together. Without him, we would probably be a bunch of quiet people keeping to ourselves. He's a really great guy. As our last night, do I have to say more? We proceed to play Shogi of course! But this time I did not sleep. We even did some present exchanges.

END OF AISEP
Because Erwann, the french guy who was 1-Dan, couldn't speak chinese and he have a flight around the same time as me, I was asked to guide him to the airport. Before leaving the hotel we give our thanks and gratitude to Mr. Kazuma, the host of this event and left for the airport. We have a lot of chat together and once we check ourselves into the airport I had one last Shogi against one of the members of AISEP - Erwann. I mean he's 1-Dan! How can I possibly defeat him and to make things worst we're not playing handicapped games! But it's alright, I said to myself, all I have to do is try my best. From my experience, the reason for most of my losses is because I'm not very strong in joseki (openings) or how to tackle them so I have decided to destroy his joseki and bring us into unknown territory.Without basic joseki, we have to use our mind to think of good strategic way of defeating each other. I'm very sure I could have lose to him until he exchange his rook with my gold. I even landed a lucky chance to place my bishop into his territory so I can instantly promote my Bishop to a Horse. Eventhough I have a lot of advantages in my hand but it's going to take a lot of luck to strike into his base. So I have decided to wait for him to make a mistake. Since we're playing an unknown opening, it's very hard to decide how to advance our attack. I didn't advance my attack because I don't know how so I just sit back and wait. At the same time I'm very cautious how I should move my piece so my base wouldn't be a weak spot for a rook drop from his hands. Finally he made a mistake and I proceed to checkmate him. It's just me being lucky I guess. So my results of playing Shogi during my stay in Beijing is 1 win and 7 losses? Finally we shook hands with each other and I promise him that someday we'll have a battle against each other in international tournaments.

Because I didn't have any good sleep, I slept through my flight and when I do reach home I actually slept for 18 hours! There you have it. My report on AISEP.

A Tsume Shogi book (Mating problems) given by a very very cute Japanese girl. She said that her father was actually the one who wrote Shogi Paradise (the name of this book). Thank you very much!

A magnetic Shogi set given by another cute and beautiful Japanese girl. Thanks to her I don't have to go through the trouble looking for magnetic Shogi set. Now I can play Shogi everywhere! WAHAHAA! THANKS ALOT FOR THIS SET!

Lastly my most prize possession....

A very expensive Shogi pieces given by Mr. Kazuma! If I'm not mistaken this actually cost more than US$100? Anyways it's a really really REALLY good Shogi pieces. I'm going to treasure it alot and hope I won't use it unless for competition. Best present receive ever. I did reject accepting this gift from Mr. Kazuma but he still insist giving it to me. Thanks alot Kazuma! *Huggles Kazuma* Kore wa saiko! saiko = greatest.

After AISEP?
So what am I going to do for the rest of the holidays? Well, the usual. Playing Shogi throughout the night and hope I can achieve 1-Dan in less than half a year. And just now I was asked to promote Shogi on 27th July from Japan Club. I do hope more local Malaysians will be interested in playing Shogi after the Japan Fair on 27th July. I'm also thinking of contacting Japan Shogi Association regarding about the Shogi lessons that they have in Malaysia. For the time being I'm just chilling out and relax!

Anyways I would like to say a few words to all the members of AISEP:
Thanks for all the things and stuffs you have done! I'm really really glad I have met everyone in Beijing. You all are the best! I hope I can get to see you all again next year or sometime later in the future! Anyways I wish you all good luck in life and may angels watch over you while you're lonely or sad! Once again thanks for everything!

Hey all!

Tomorrow's finally the big day! Because of this I've decided to let you know what I have done today! Well, actually I didn't do anything much but at least I've finished up one of my presentations! Took me the whole day to do it too! I even got most of my stuff pack!

Don't mind about my messy room. I've only done packing my clothes but not my other stuffs. And I just finish my presentation at that time. And guess what I had for dinner?

...you guessed it! It's Mc Donalds! LOL! One grilled chicken foldover large meal and a Mc Flurry Oreo. YUM YUM! It's going to be my last food in Malaysia before departing for Beijing.

And this is after I've got everything packed except my shampoo. No, I'm not going to bring the box to Beijing! What do you think I'm going to Beijing for? Exporting a box full of drugs? Oops, looks like the secret has been uncovered. =X Red Luggage for my clothes, the Nike bag for my traveling or shopping and my laptop bag. Now you might be thinking why I haven't pack my laptop. You silly old goat, I still need to use it so I can upload my photos from my camera and write my journal!

Anyways I'm really really REALLY glad that everything went smooth and fine. Now I just have to chill back, relax and wait for my transport tomorrow. My dream of meeting Habu is getting closer and closer. Well, six hours left till my transport arrives, I think I better start getting some sleep. Oh, I will be reporting my stay in Beijing everyday so look out for it! I'll be very sure to take plenty of photos!

Two Days Left!

Since it's two days before AISEP (Asian Intellectual Shogi Exchange Program), today I receive a very shocking e-mail from the host. I was asked to do three different kinds of presentation in two days! Oh my god! Aside from those I actually spent the whole day helping out my dad with his "Puja Events". Since I'm so good in Maths let's do a little Maths, shall we? =)

Since I just receive the e-mail and have to finish the presentation in 2 days the equation is:

Three presentations + finish in two days = trouble

And then plus that I helped out my dad today...

three presentation + finish in two days + help out dad (wasted one day) = deep trouble

And the time right now is 10pm...

three presentations + finish in two days + help out dad the whole day + 10pm right now = super deep trouble

To make things worst, I'm a little clueless about what I'm suppose to write for my topics so...

I wish the host could have send me the topic earlier rather than now. *sigh* I'm actually doing the presentation right now while crying. I wish I could have shown you my face right now. LOL (but why am I wasting time writing this journal?).

Hey all,

IT'S FINALLY HOLIDAYS! And for this journal I will be showing a lot of pictures that I've promised in the past!

The first picture I'm going to proudly show is the present that my friends bought for me last month for my birthday.

Yes, it is all in Japanese! I don't know what my friends are thinking, buying a Japanese-language Shogi book for me. I can't understand a thing at all! But thank god I managed to understand the kifu (kifu - the moves in the game) and it only took me 4 hrs to finish this book! Definitely the best present I've receive for this year. Thank you my dear best friends!

This is the second Tsume Shogi book (Mating Solving problems) book I've bought in Kinokuniya, eventhough I didn't finish the first one. It is very tough but useful. The other day I was in Kinokuniya reading another tsume shogi book and inside it there's a little small test to determine your strength. I tried it out and found out I was at least 7 kyu. I'm not really sure whether I'm this strong or not but I prefer ranking myself as 9 kyu. I want to be a powerful 1-Dan Shogi Player afterall. What's the point of giving myself the 1-Dan title if I don't even have that strength? Speaking of strength it's almost been a year playing Shogi and I still achieve 1-Dan! Uh oh. Looks like my dream of becoming a Professional Shogi player is still faraway...

Speaking of Kinokuniya I've made a special order....

I know the picture's a little blur but I've made a special subscription for a magazine called "Shogi Sekai" (Shogi World), which was only sold in the bookstores in Japan! It only cost RM40! It was cheap! This way I'll be more notify about Shogi events! WOOOHOOO! I just can't wait for the order to arrive on this incoming July! I hope you can see carefully I've made order for the June issue. Can't wait to read it soon! ^^

Lastly for the last pictures...

This is the Shogi board that I've mentioned months ago that I purchase from UK. And this will be the board that I'm going to let Habu-san signed when I go to Beijing at the end of this month! WOOHOO!

I think that's all. I've got my China visa done and air-tickets purchased, which means it's already confirm that I'll be going to Beijing to participate AISEP (Asian Intellectual Shogi Exchange Program). All things are going well and smooth for me. For this holiday, I'll be spending the whole day playing Shogi and I might probably write a story if I feel like it. =)

BTW, I will be going back to Brunei again next month. Hope you all enjoy your days!

BEIJING HERE I COME! (AISEP Part 2)

Hey all!

I finally get to go to Beijing to participate AISEP! WOOHOO! I can't my mom just agree to let me go! I'm SO SO SO SO SOOOOOO HAPPY! You just can't believe how many troubles I have to get through just to get myself to join this event.

First is convincing my mom. I have to lie to her that I was invited to join this event but the lie eventually became real. I spend considerable amount of time to gather all the informations by going to embassy of china and various places just to prove to her it's real.

Just when she was going to agree I had a car accident. She immediately change her mind of not letting me go. I completely lose my hope of going to Beijing It was my fault for getting the car banged and it should be a punishment for me not to go to Beijing. But I didn't give up. I continue to ask her, convince her and told her that she only needs to pay the air ticket expenses. She still hesitate to let me go but in the end she gave in. Now all I have to do is get my Visa done, buy the air ticket on Monday and then off I go!

I am so so glad that I got chosen for AISEP event and I get to meet my most favourite Shogi player - Yoshiharu Habu! The first thing I'm going to do is buy a permanent marker, bring my shogi set to Beijing and let him sign on it! WOOHOO! I guess luck is on my side for being passionate about playing Shogi for the rest of my life.

Though this is a very exciting news for me but there might be a chance that I won't be able to participate. You see, recently I've gotten myself into a car accident and ever since then my mom was considering of not letting me go. But I really hope I can convince my mom to let me go no matter what. I really really want to see Habu-san no matter what. After this year I might not be able to see him again in my life. I truly hope my mom can understand this small wish of mine. Still this is once in a life time experience for me. I want to go there no matter what.

Anyways I'm currently busy with my exam and I hope to play Shogi the whole night again after the next Thursday. I can't wait to use the Shogi book that my friends have bought for me during my birthday! But the only thing is I can't understand what the book is saying since it's all in Japanese and I can't read Japanese! Nevertheless I'm going to crack my head and use the book if I want to further improve my tesuji and skills.

Happy and sick!

Hey all!

How are you all doing? I'm not really doing well, I'm feeling a little sick right now. But I think I'll recover by tomorrow after I wake up. Since I'm a little sick obviously I'm not working on the story. When I do, I will definitely start writing it. Until then, please bear with me!

Aside from that, do you remember few days ago I said that I lost one of my Shogi's piece? I was really depressed about it so I went back to college and look for it again. Even if there's no hope in finding it again I tried my luck. Unfortunately I can't find it. I CAN'T FIND IT!!! Instead of being depressed, I cheer myself up by using the extra "pawn" piece to replace the "gold" piece. I put a tape on the back side of the pawn piece and used it as a gold piece. I'm thinking of going back to the shop in Brunei next month and purchase a new set again. Until then I hope I won't lose another piece.

After a few days of losing the "gold" piece, my shogi set has finally arrived from UK!!! WOW! I didn't expect it to arrive in less than a month! My last purchase took a month and a half to arrive. I totally didn't expect it to arrive so fast! I was going to upload the picture of it but since I'm so lazy maybe I'll upload it next time. There are few things that I'm not satisfied with my "Play Shogi Today 2" set. First the "promoted" side of the pieces are not written in red! The other thing that I'm not really satisfied is the shogi pieces are really flat! Nevertheless I will try my best to get used to this new set. At least I don't have to worry about the wooden board tearing up, unlike my paper shogi board.

Last Friday I went to Ipoh with my assignment group. It was fantastic! After our site visit in Ipoh we went around town to look for the best food like "white coffee" or "ngai choi chicken" or whatever you called it. Nevertheless I really enjoy hanging out with my new friends.

On the next day I once again went to JCKL (Japan Club Kuala Lumpur) to play Shogi. However there are only four people playing Shogi (all of them are japanese) and LOTS OF LOTS of people playing Go! It's sad to find that Shogi population is so small. Because I don't feel well, I couldn't concentrate on my games that day. My first three match was against a rather short old japanese man. I lost my first two games to him but later made my victory on my third game. I was very ashamed of myself because i made countless of mistakes just because I couldn't concentrate well. Finally he have to go home and guess what? My next opponent was the old japanese man who defeat the crap out of me few months ago! If you actually remember reading my journal few months ago about an old japanese man who beat me, it's him! I was very nervous facing him because I'm scared I might lose to him again. To make things worst, I couldn't concentrate properly just because I'm sick. And so our match begins.

It was rather hard for me to break into his enemy base. Eventhough I succeeded in breaking into his base but it only took a while for him to break into my base. He kept on breaking my king's defense. Whenever I have the chance I took my opportunity to continue attacking his base. After a few moves he began tearing off my defense. I defense all I could to prevent myself from checkmate. However he made a few minor mistakes. He actually made a wrong move on his "Dragon" that gave me an opportunity to check both his "Dragon" and his King and I captured his "Dragon" with ease. But he doesn't give up, he still continue to attack me with all his might. After exhausting almost all of his attacks, he proceed to capture my "Lance" with his second "Dragon". Again, because of his greed, I made another attempt of checking both his King and his "Dragon" again! Soon he used up all his "captured" piece and he was only left with a few pawns! The only pieces he have in my base are his "Horse" and "Silver". I managed to capture all the pieces "Gold, Silver and Knight" when he attempt to checkmate me. "Now it's the opportunity to counterattack," I thought. So I proceed to attack his king with my "Horse" and start checking his King. Finally his King has nowhere to run - I have defeated him! Admitting defeat, he was impressed of me and we both nod to thank each other for the game. Before he left his seat, he actually took out his hand to shake hands with me! Feeling proud I shake his hands with great happiness and since all the Shogi players have left, I continued to study Shogi in JCKL all alone. I couldn't believe I actually defeated him! I should have asked his name! The only regret is I couldn't show him my full concentration because I'm sick. I hope I get to play with him again next time and show him what I'm capable of! Only half a year have passed and I've already made a lot of improvements in my Shogi. I gotta work more harder so I can become a professional shogi player!

Anyways that's all I have to report for now. Sorry for talking too much about Shogi again. It seems that I talk about Shogi almost everyday with my friends and family. I hope my friends won't get irritated about me talking about Shogi all the time. See you all next week and I hope I can get my story done in time!

Happy Japanese New Year!

Hey hey hey all!

First of all I would like to wish all the Japanese happy new year! I'm not sure whether today's a new year for Japanese because the Japan Club Kuala Lumpur (JCKL) held a new year festival today! It was a blast! I've never seen so many Japanese in my life! But the main reason why I went to JCKL is to apply membership for the Shogi club. Now I'm officially a member of the Shogi Club of JCKL and I'm really hoping to play more Shogi and learn new stuffs from them! The Japanese in Shogi Club was surprised that I know how to play Shogi (since I was a chinese and the only non-japanese guy who knows how to play Shogi) and they arrange a few games with me against a kid of about 7 kyu. Amazingly I've obtained victory over the kid for all the four games. The adults felt impressed of me and arrange a game with me against an adult of rank 1-kyu. The game lasted for about an hour and I achieved another victory! WOOHOO! But the thing is I made a few mistakes in the game and I think he purposely go easy against me. I should have copied down the notes so I can research the game now. and learn his and my mistakes. However they said I'm very strong and even asked me to challenge the president of the club, which has a rank of 5-Dan! 5-Dan!? Are you crazy? I'll probably get beaten out of the crap by him! Tired and scared of the challenge, I reject them. To be honest, I really want to test my skills against him but I'll probably do that next time. Anyways it was a great festival in JCKL. I hope to attend more festivals in the future.

Alright, I'm really tired after four Shogi games (against the 7-kyu kid) and one not-too-stressful Shogi game (against 1-kyu adult). I really need to rest now. I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night to learn Shogi again. Until next week, bye!

A brand new year and a brand new hope!

Happy New Year!

I can't believe two years just passed by like that in Malaysia! Anyways hope you all have a great time celebrating Christmas and New Year! As for me, I went and watch a movie with my sister during Christmas. I can't really spend Christmas with my friends because they're outstation. During new year's eve, I went Melaka with my sister and her friends and we have so much fun there! Great food and enjoy the fireworks with the locals, it was really fun and exciting.

So what is everyone's new year resolution? Mine of course will be becoming a 1-Dan Shogi player this year! Hahahahaha. Hope I can really achieve this rank before this year ends!

Anyways I went to kinokuniya again to search for Shogi related books. No luck for me until I found a few in the Japanese Section. Eventhough I can't understand Japanese but I feel that I should buy it and practise the questions.

I don't know what's the full title is but what I do know is it's a Tsume Shogi questions (Shogi Mating Questions) and it's for players between 9 kyu and 1 kyu. The questions inside are tough for me to solve and I personally think it will help me improve my skills alot. If you look carefully at the photo, you can actually see my "Art of Shogi" behind and my lousy Shogi sets (with paper as the board) at the right side. Speaking of my lousy Shogi sets I have purchase a good Shogi sets a week ago for about US$90 and I will be hoping to receive it around next month. I can't wait for it to arrive! Hate to admit it but it's really expensive to purchase it. Anyways today I just finish learning about "Static Rook" opening and I can't wait to start learning "Central Rook" opening! I'll probably purchase "Habu's Words" after I've done reading everything in "Art of Shogi".

I'm looking forward to be under your care again this year!

Just a little small update

Hey all.

It's 1.38 AM now. I know it's only been two days but I'm a little bored and just felt like writing a journal. Yesterday (22nd December) I spend almost the whole day with my parents. It was really tiring. I guess it's alright since they're going to leave Malaysia on 24th Dec.

Just now I was playing against an online Web Shogi game called "Ham Shogi". I knew I couldn't beat hirate (even number of pieces) so I've decided to try my luck playing against handicapped opponent. I'm really glad that I've learned a little eventhough I'm playing against handicapped opponent. To be honest, I hate playing Shogi on the internet. Why? First it's rather hard to concentrate with the board facing flat against your eyes. It's view is completely different from the view when you're playing a real Shogi. Sometimes I accidentally made a mistake about my bishop move so I have to looked at the board more than three times before making a move on my bishop so I wouldn't 'pin' or 'fork' on the wrong piece. It's really annoying when you actually pin or fork on the wrong piece and the game immediately turn the table. Other thing is the computer screen is hurting my eyes and everyone should know that staring at the computer too long will hurt your eyes. My hands are itching to touch my Shogi sets right now. I really want to turn on the lights and start touching my Shogi pieces. But I can't. If I did not pretend to be fast asleep my parents would immediately bust into my room and kick my butt. I really want to spend the whole night learning and playing Shogi, I truly am. So that was why I was stuck using my laptop playing Shogi instead. "It's alright" I said to myself, It's going be another two more days till they leave Malaysia. I have to wait patiently. I hope three days will go by quickly so I return to the days where I can play Shogi the whole night without worrying people scolding me for being too noisy or staying up too late. 2.00 AM now. I guess I'll go play some Shogi checking problems before I sleep.

Back Back BACK!

hey all.

Many things have happened alot during this holiday so let's have a report about what I have done, shall we?

My days in Brunei:
1. Rewatch all Weiß kreuz episodes throughout the night.
2. Doing something confidential.
3. Look for old friends and have some personal time together.
4. Play Shogi with little sister.
5. Get nagged by parents. >.<

My days in Singapore:
Day 1: I reached Singapore around 1p.m. and stayed in a hotel called "Furama Hotel". After that I tried my luck in finding Shogi equipments in People's Park and OG which is nearby. I even went to Borders to look for it but failed.
Day 2: Have breakfast in People's Park and went to Takashimaya and tried my luck again in Kinokuniya but couldn't find any. Mission Failed. After that I went to Orchad Road and look for some CDs. "Get Gil Shaham's Devil Dance CD!"
Day 3: Left Singapore with a sigh because I failed to find anything related to Shogi.

Plans for the rest of the holiday:
Play Shogi of course! I didn't get to play Shogi as much as I can because my parents are actually against me playing Shogi! I don't see anything wrong with playing Shogi! I didn't get to practise as much as I can so I have decide to spend more time in it when they leave Malaysia. Then I would probably spend a little time watching movies to relax myself.

Mission in Singapore: to look for a "Shogi magnetic set" so I can play without worrying my shogi pieces get lost and "Wooden Shogi Sets" to have a proper set to play with and some Shogi books so I can learn.
Mission Status: FAILED. Couldn't find any of those items in Singapore.

Sigh. It was really depressing. I can't believe Singapore don't have them! I managed to find some Shogi books but they're only available in Japanese! AND THEY WERE WRITTEN BY HABU-SAN TOO!!! I wish they would publish more English-translated Habu-san's books. Sigh. Since I can't find them in Singapore, I guess I have to switch to an alternative way of getting them - online purchase. Online purchase is really expensive for me and it takes time for them to arrive but what choice do I have? I'm going to get a proper Shogi set first from online and later when I save up enough money I'll try to purchase other products if I can.

Work Harder!

Hey all!

Freedom at last! Actually I didn't expect to be free again because I thought my schedule was full until I leave Brunei but things went smooth and end early. However I won't be SUPER free like I am back in Malaysia because of my nagging parents.

Now that I'm free, I would probably spend some time with my friends and if not I will be learning Shogi at home as usual. I haven't play Shogi in an internet Shogi website called "Shogi Club 24" (http://www.shogidojo.com/eng/engindex.htm) for a few months because I'm scared that I will get beaten out of crap against lowest rank players (15kyu), I decided to give myself a try again and see how much I've improve. After a game with a player, I lost again. However I'm quite happy that I've improve my techniques a little. Last time my opponents finished me off in less than 20 moves but now the game last for more than 50 moves and 20 minutes! I won't be visiting "Shogi Club 24" again until I've studied more with my "Art of Shogi" but I will visit it once in a while. The main reason why I haven't visit the site for such a long time is because I'm scared that my defeat will make me lose my interest in Shogi. However, after playing the game, I feel that I need to improve more. I definitely need to work harder than before if I want to become a professional. WORK HARDER RYOU! YOU CAN DO IT! DON'T GIVE UP HOPE FOR YOUR DREAMS! KAMBATTE!

My Dreams

Mission: To promote Shogi and let people know that Shogi is different and unique from other chess in Malaysia and Brunei after becoming a 1-Dan Shogi player.

PS: I just noticed how Shogi has improve my skills in Xian Qi (Chinese Chess) considering that I'm very terrible in it. Now, I can almost defeat my friend in a game of Xian Qi.

Back in my hometown

Hey all!

I'm finally back in my hometown and all I can say is there's not enough time for me to look for my friends and play shogi! I can't believe my parents have plan my schedule for something else while I'm staying in my hometown.

The happy thing is it's great that I get to see my old hometown the way it is. The scenery is so fantastic that I really miss it alot. Aside from that, I've manage to convince my little sister to play Shogi. Almost day and night we're playing Shogi together using a small little table. She always lose to me, given the fact that she's very good in Chinese Chess (Xian Qi). This further proves that Shogi is not an easy chess to play. I even notice that I can beat my little sister with a Rook handicap. I'm really glad the night that I have spend reading "Art of Shogi" has made me improve my concentration and skills a little. Sad thing is most of the time I can't beat Shogi AI. I think I'll probably improve a whole lot more if I can master all the Joseki (opening). Another sad thing is my dad doesn't like me to play Shogi. I mean what kind of father he is? Shogi is a healthy hobby game so why should he be against it? But I have made up my mind. If he's going to stop me from playing Shogi, I will definitely run away from home.I won't let him take away my interest any longer. He doesn't know how hard it is for me to find something that I actually love doing it. I guess being a parent would always want their kids to "study study study" only. I mean you can't expect me to spend my free time studying too, right? Sometimes I really envy the lucky kids out there. They get to enjoy doing the stuffs they like during their free time and as for mine my dad nags me to study. No, I'm not weak in my studies. I'm actually doing very well in it and I just don't understand why I have to work SUPER hard to study. Nevertheless I will not give up on Shogi. I hope to achieve at least 1-Dan in a year and 6-Dan in 10 years time.

Ten more days till I'm flying to Singapore. I'm really looking forward to look for Shogi sets and books there. If they don't have it I guess I'll have to purchase it online again. Aside from these I did not work on my stories since I was busy. I'll probably start writing again when I'm back in Malaysia around 21st December. Hope you all have fun during this christmas season!

It's Holiday Time!

Hey all! Ryou here!

My exam on last Friday was really horrible. I didn't expect an easy paper to be tough! Now that the exams over, it's holiday time! I am so glad that my exams over! It means more time for me to study Shogi! ^_^V

I have been studying Shogi from 11pm to 7am for the past few days. From reading "Art of Shogi" to watching online replays to solve problems. I'm really excited that I can spend a lot of my free time just to play Shogi.

I will be returning back to my hometown this Saturday and I probably don't have time to online or play Shogi or write stories. This really makes me feel sad alot. =( However I will be going to Singapore on the 14th Dec and I hope I could find any Shogi sets (ones with wooden board and wooden or plastic pieces) and some Shogi books. If I can't find any of those, I will probably have to spend a lot of money and wait for another two months just for them to arrive if I purchase it online. =/

Enough talk from me. It's time for me to go back and study Shogi. =P Hope you guys have fun during the holiday season!

OH MY SHOGI GOD!

Hey all!

I know it's only been less than a day but when I woke up this morning I was surprised to find a professional shogi player named 'tadokori' comment on my last journal. I knew I was familiar with this name until I realised he was a kishi (professional shogi player) who had played against another player called Archon during November 2004 with a 6-piece handicapped http://www.shogi.net/ISC/Katsuta2/04Nov_monthlygame/ArchonvsTako.htm Yes, I know most of you probably don't know how to play Shogi but if you watch that replay it'll make you go "Oh my god!" That replay has actually inspired me to keep on playing to become a professional shogi player.

It has started a few months ago when my friend had asked me to bring him to Japan Club Kuala Lumpur (a Japanese Association) in Malaysia so he can played with the Go-players there. I agreed because I had a little interest in Go and I was trying to be generous to my new college friend. Being a 1-Dan Go-player he was quite happy to meet strong players there since it's hard to find players as strong as he is around his area (except for the internet). That's when part of my life has changed. I saw a few Japanese old men playing Shogi right in front of my eyes! There aren't that many Shogi players because it was suppose to be a Go-Club afterall. Feeling interested I take a look at how they played. Not understanding how Shogi is played, that night I went back home and start researching and mastering the basic moves of the pieces. Then finally I download a Shogi program and practise on it.

Since both my friend and I were going back to Japan Club during the next weekend, I have decided to challenge one of the old men a game of Shogi. It was very awkward to play with the Japanese man since I couldn't speak Japanese and I only played Shogi for less than a week. Weird thing is the old man didn't handicapped himself eventhough he knew I was a beginner, which in the end I lost in the game twice badly. But I was satisfied about my first game with him since it lasted longer when I have used "Kin Yagura" in the game. After losing the game, I have decided to improve my skills further so one day I can go back there and defeat him. That's how my "true" love for Shogi has begin.

Knowing that it's hard for me to defeat a Shogi player who is way stronger than me, I try to test my skills by challenging 15 kyu players (lowest rank) in Shogi Club 24 (a site where you can play online Shogi). Again I got beaten badly by them, eventhough they're 15-kyu players! I realised that Shogi is nothing like Chess nor Xianqi. You can't just simply play and hoped to improve - you have to actually study them! So feeling desperate I began searching the net for some strategies and tips but the sad thing is Shogi is not popular in the world and I couldn't find that many sites about Shogi. As time passes my interest in Shogi grew so much that I have decided to be a professional Shogi player and hope to promote Shogi in Southeast Asia since it was unpopular.

Less but not least, Shogi FTW. I really do hope my love for Shogi will still go on for the next 50 years... or forever!

I think most of you have probably gotten bored of me talking about Shogi. Lol. As for Goshogi the editor is still working on it and I would like to say good job to the editor because my story has somewhat irritate him due to my lousy English. lol. Like I have mention in the previous journal the story will be out before the end of this week and I'm thinking of writing another one next month when I get back to my hometown.

Relaxing... for the time being

Hey all,

Actually I've completed the story on Sunday afternoon and I was glad I've finally have some free time for myself. I've been actually learning Shogi throughout the night for more than 9 hours! How insane could I get? Eventhough I have more free time my last exam is on this Friday so I have to start revising my work on Wednesday night. After Friday I can fully concentrate writing either Final Heaven X, Goshogi or the murder story.
